Devotional Patterns

When I was growing up, I thought that the only time to do devotions was early in the morning at about four or five.  I also thought that it had to include four or five songs from the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal; A Morning Watch reading; Study of the Sabbath School Lesson  and a long prayer.   This pattern was ingrained and embedded in me because this was what was done in my home.   I felt that to stray from that path was sacrilegious or downright sinful.   However, with the passing of years and a better understanding of scripture, my personality and God's desire for growth, I have come to recognize that we all don't do things the same way and our walk with God is much different.   There is no right or wrong pattern

Today, I get up later than 4 or 5 am ( that is sometimes when I go to sleep...do not tell anyone).  I start about 10 minutes after rising and follow this Sequence :  I do not necessarily sing hymns only but sometimes vary between listening a few songs from my computer playlist ( sometimes singing along with it) and or singing contemporary praise and worship songs.  I spend about 20 minutes reading the Bible and thinking of its application to my own life.  I try to find at least four application points.   For the most part, I follow a sequential reading ( I am now reading the book of Exodus).   I then close with meditation and prayer. The total time for my devotion ranges between 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

What is your devotional life like? Do you have daily devotions?  If not, why not?   If you do, Share the composition of your daily devotions.

A one on one devotional time for me, starts with prayer first. I like to ask the Lord to reveal to me what he has in the word for me. Then I sing about 2 songs and read the Bible or a devotional thought. I really like doing devotion because it give me inspiration for the day. I try to do my devotions in the morning, but if I am running late I do it in the evenings. A daily prayer life and reading God's word helps to keep me in his presence.

Sometimes it gets so busy during the day but I have to make time for devotion. I do it as often as I feel during the day. I talk to God throughout the day and he speaks back to me. I read my bible early morning and it gives me the jump start I need. I pray and listen to Richard Smallwood's Praise and Worship (Thank You). I also have a devotional book at my desk and I read it and pray before I start work. I find that devotion throughout the day; music, praying, reading the bible, and speaking to God helps keep me close to Him. I do not think there has to be a routine but there is a formula. God Bless

Ahhh, yes; I can love, I can laugh, I can live, but the best time is truly the time I spend with my God each day. Usually an hour or two each morn, through prayer; study of the Word and/or Spirit of Prophecy, ending with prayer. A song is usually in my mind from something I was listening to the night before or on my lips as I sing from the hymnal. I prefer to do subject and/or character studies. My devotional time is a time through which I gain strength to meet the days challenges and it helps me to put the day's happenings in Heaven's perspective. If you have not experience it. I challenge you to try it. GOD WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!

I, too, used to think that devotions had to be done very early (but then I'd fall asleep and receive no benefit) and follow a specific pattern.
Now, I do my devotions shortly after rising (whatever time it is). I start with prayer; then I read my Sabbath School lesson (this quarter I have a specific Bible for the purpose of highlighting the texts used in the lesson--just to see how much scripture we cover in a quarter--I've been amazed by how much we have covered already); then my regular Bible has daily readings marked and I read them (there are no dates so I don't have to feel bad if I miss a day and feel like I'm behind). I listen to Christian music throughout the day and pray whenever I think of it during the day. This is working for me better than previous efforts.
